Mental Health & Smoking

  • The incidence of smoking in patients with mental illness is nearly double that of the general population, and is nearly triple in those with severe mental health conditions (such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder)1
  • Those with a severe mental illness have a lifetime expectancy 10-20 years less than the general population1
  • Smoking is a common risk factor among the mental health population, also being one of the causes of cardiovascular disease, stroke and cancer2
  • Studies have highlighted a potential link between quitting smoking and a reduction in levels of depression, anxiety and stress3
  • Evidence suggests that people living with a mental health condition are as motivated to quit smoking as the general population4
  • Behavioural support, in combination with pharmacological aids, help with smoking cessation in those living with a mental health condition5,6

Smoking & Mental Health Toolkit

Johnson and Johnson Limited have created and reviewed, in partnership with Mental Health UK (Registered Charity no. 1170815), a factsheet and conversation guide, as well as a patient leaflet to support healthcare professionals to help smokers living with mental health conditions to quit smoking for good.
